Early Years education is about initially forming purposeful, responsive, respectful and sensitive relationships between adult and child. This meaningful relationship for adult and child starts from the moment the child is born- some would say even before birth. What if the child’s unique learning story, is hidden beneath what seems to the practitioner to be a confusing pattern of learning behaviours?
Description
Every child’s ‘learning story’, is unique. How they perceive or understand the world around them expresses their personality, interests, learning styles and thought processes. What is your learning story? Here is mine. I have studied and trained on how differing child development patterns, social, emotional and mental health, specific learning difficulties, the autistic spectrum, attachment disorder, sensory processing, down’s syndrome, developmental coordination difficulties can impact upon how a child plays and learns. My passion for education does not simply include the child, but also wishes to empower the practitioner. My interest in differences in learning styles emerged from my own childhood. Having mild cerebral palsy created some difficulty with processing information, speech and language development and coordination.
I have many memories of coming home to my wonderful parents in tears as I was unable to fully understand the day’s lessons only to find them later sitting with me and re-creating these learning experiences using very unique styles of teaching. I soon learnt that teaching and learning does not come.
